As brides begin planning all the details for their big day, it’s hard to ignore the environmental impact that each choice makes. But don’t worry- there are many easy ways to leave green footprints as you walk down the aisle!
Deciding to have an eco-friendly wedding doesn’t mean you need to elope at city hall or drive off into the sunset in a hybrid Prius. Small alternatives to store-bought items along the way will also help make a difference!
When you pick out your engagement and wedding rings, try to go through a jeweler that uses recycled stones and metals. Recycled jewelry glitters just as brightly! Use recycled paper throughout your wedding for invitations, guest books, table place cards, and thank you notes. When you are registering for gifts, only register for those items you really need, and give guests the option of donating to a wildlife fund instead. Say “I don’t” to massive carbon emissions by having your wedding in a location closest to the majority of your guests, and offer trolleys or buses for guests to get from the ceremony to the reception. Incorporating nature into your decorations is easy and very pretty. Use willow branches as your centerpieces, mixed in with your favorite flowers. Instead of giving guests favors that they will most likely pitch in the garbage on the way out, give them painted rocks, potted herbs, or tree seedlings that they can plant later in memory of your special day. Consider using wildflowers for your bouquet, or at least using flowers and food from local farms. There are many small ways you can reduce your wedding’s impact on the environment, so plan a day that will lead to a happy ending for your marriage—and for the planet!
