First came the question of “"Will you Marry Me?"

From there on, the wedding planning process is pretty much just a flurry of questions. One of the most important ones you’ll be asked is . . .

“Will you and your groom be seeing each other before the ceremony?”

Gasp! Most people haven’t thought about that until their photographer, wedding planner, or officiant asks them. While many factors will come into play – timing, tradition, and superstition – nothing matters more than what you and your fiance actually want, not what history dictates. We’ll fess up – we have a bit of a biased towards seeing each other before the ceremony. It alleviates a bit of the anxiety, gives you more time for pictures and just makes the overall timeline flow much easier. In response to the "it won’t be as special," we argue that it’s even more special because you’re seeing each other for the first time and it’s just about the two of you, not the two hundred people seeing you see each other for the first time. Not only did we ask some of our photographers to share some of their "first glance" images that they’ve captured, we asked for their opinions on this hotly debated issue!

The pictures I can capture of that first moment are amazing. I know I try to make it super special, in a beautiful environment, and then after I get my shots, I give them some time alone together. This gives them a chance to actually speak to one another, where if they do not see each other before, and their first look is during the ceremony, they cannot really say much.

From a photographer’s stand point, the bride is a completely different person from the “first look” and on. The anxiety and anticipation until that moment is usually very apparent. After the first look, her shoulders are relaxed and the nervous smile is replaced by a natural smile.

What’s a good setting to do the "first glance" photos in?

Anywhere that has good light, no distractions and an uncluttered background

I love outside! Trees with a beautiful walk way. I would photograph in front of the groom to capture both his and the bride’s anticipation as she nears him!

Anywhere that allows us to capture the personality and energy of the bride and groom. Some show their spirit best in a field of grass or among beautiful trees... others would excel in a vintage building environment.

What would you say to someone who said “we want it to be special when he sees me coming down the aisle?”

I agree that this is definitely a special moment. However, we have the chance to create this moment in an entirely new and unique way...without an audience. And better yet, as photographers we are able to capture this with a wider scope of options on location.

I TOTALLY understand and can guarantee it still will be!! That’s the moment where it becomes so real - you are really going to spend the rest of your lives together!

It still is! That is your ceremony, when you are actually getting married! That moment is still just as special. Brides are still crying when they walk down that aisle, regardless of seeing each other before.
